Why…

I am oftened asked why I write what I write and where my ideas come from. Most of my writings reflect the life I have lived and how I grew up. Lessons from my Grandfather along with life lessons make up a lot of my essays. As for the ideas, most come to me in the middle of the night in dreams or thoughts. These are messages from God asking me to write about a particular subject. He also won’t let me publish them until I have it just as He wants it.

All my posts are written to be conversation starters with the hope that you, the reader, will ask questions or offer your feelings on the subject. I use these thoughts, comments and feelings to write new posts.

With that in mind, three posts have gotten a lot of comments and feelings. The Cup, How Do We Measure Love and A Talk With The Father. Interesting though is they all share a common thread – Why.

Why didn’t God remove evil from the world when He sent Jesus here? How can a loving God allow people to starve to death? Why, if there is only one God, does He allow a religion to exist that wants to murder Christians? Why should we measure love and how does it really measure us?

All are valid questions with really the same answer – Faith. The real question is do we really have Faith? You don’t overcome darkness by focusing on the darkness. You overcome the darkness by focusing on the light, and you don’t overcome sin by focusing on sin. You overcome sin by dwelling not on sin but on God. You overcome emptiness by dwelling on His presence. You solve your problem, not by dwelling on the problem, but by dwelling on the answer, by being filled up with the answer. You overcome sorrow by the presence of joy and hate by the presence of love and evil by the presence of good.

As Christians we firmly believe the Bible is the word of God. We also believe firmly in John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” We also believe, through the bible, that God created all men in His image.

So with so many religions in the world how can there only be one God and how can He allow one religion decide to murder another? For that matter why does He allow murder at all? The answer is freewill. So why did He give us freewill?

Without freewill there would be no love because we wouldn’t have anything to compare it with. Love overcomes hate as light overcomes dark. It’s the contrast that makes it real. It’s our Faith in God that shines the reality of this.

As to the question of measuring love and how it measures us let us consider His commandment in Matthew 22: 34-40 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus repliedLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

This is our measure of love and to how love measures us.

Matthew 25 says it best: The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.

I will close with this thought: You can’t know, with Faith you can only believe—or not.

Walk daily with God at your side!

Love always,

Ed
